A lock that has started sticking, grinding or needing the handle lifted harder each week is not a lock that has failed yet. It is one that is telling you it is about to. Dealt with at that point, most locks are a repair. Left until the door will not open at all, the same job becomes an emergency callout and a replacement.
We carry euro cylinders, five-lever mortice locks, night latches, multipoint mechanisms and patio door gear as van stock, so the great majority of repairs and replacements are finished in a single visit.
A large share of the callouts we attend as a “broken lock” turn out not to be a broken lock at all. Doors settle, hinges wear and timber moves with the seasons, so the bolt stops meeting the keep cleanly. Realigning the door or adjusting the keep fixes it properly and costs a fraction of a replacement, and we will always tell you when that is what you are looking at.
Where a lock genuinely has failed, we will explain what went and why before fitting anything. If a cylinder has simply worn out we replace the cylinder, not the whole door mechanism. If a multipoint gearbox has seized we will tell you honestly whether the gearbox alone can be replaced or whether the full strip needs to come out.
Every replacement we fit is to at least the standard that was there before, and usually better — a standard cylinder coming out is replaced with an anti-snap one as a matter of course, because the price difference is small and the security difference is not.
