What fails is almost never the door. It is the multipoint mechanism — the metal strip running the height of the door carrying the hooks, rollers and deadbolt — and in most cases it can be repaired or replaced without touching the door itself.

There is a clear warning sign, and it is worth acting on. If you have to lift the handle harder than you used to before the door will lock, the gearbox is beginning to fail. Dealt with at that stage it is usually a straightforward repair. Left alone, it eventually seizes completely — and it tends to do so with the door closed, which turns a routine job into an emergency entry.

The other issue on doors of this age is the cylinder. The standard euro cylinders originally fitted to most UPVC doors can be snapped in well under a minute, and it remains one of the most common methods of forced entry on this type of door. A three-star anti-snap replacement costs very little and is one of the genuinely worthwhile security upgrades available.
